Giving Opportunity: No Hunger This Summer
There are over 31,700 children in Clark County who receive free and reduced meals at our schools during the week. After school is out for the summer, those children and their families have to look elsewhere to meet that need. Share Ministries, with whom we serve on a monthly basis serving meals to the homeless, has a program called Hunger Response which will use the last few weeks of school to collect nonperishable food to supplement those families in need.
Thanks to a generous match by CenturyLink, all food and cash donations made June 1-12 and directed toward Hunger Response will be matched. Schools, churches, businesses, and service organizations across the county will be using those twelve days to collect as much food as possible. Last year, between community member donations and corporate matching, Share was able to provide over 190,400 free meals to men, women and children at risk of hunger in our community!
For the next two Sundays, May 31 and June 7, you can bring in donations and drop them in the big blue barrel in the foyer. The most needed items are:
• Canned (not jarred) pasta sauce
• Canned chili & soup
• Peanut butter (18 oz. plastic jars)
• Pasta/Rice in 1 lb. bags
• Boxed meals (mac & cheese, Hamburger Helper, rice/pasta roni, etc)
• Canned fruits & vegetables
• Instant oatmeal
• Granola/snack bars
• Beef jerky
• Meals in a cup (mac & cheese, microwavable soup, etc.)
• Easy open tuna pouches & cans
• Fruit/applesauce cups
• Pudding cups
Important safety note: since these items will be going home with children, they must be packaged in metal or plastic, not glass! Also, since space in the delivery bags is limited, smaller items (not bulk) are preferred and allow Share to pack more into each bag.
Thank you for your generous support of the community’s children in need!
